The Parties

Yours and Mine

BIOGRAPHY
The incredibly refreshing guitar/pop/psych/rock by The Parties fit in perfectly with the sound of Rainbow Quartz labelmates Asteroid #4, The Morning After Girls and even Outrageous Cherry. Their unique creation of catchy pop songs are blanketed by a powerful wall of harmonies from each of the members.

The Parties play music inspired by 60's bands like The Who, Kinks, and The Velvet Underground and modern bands inspired by the 60's like Teenage Fanclub, The High Dials, and Luna. For fans of The Charlatans, Ride, Spirea X, Outrageous Cherry and the Red Button.

The Parties call San Francisco home, but have members from the East Coast as well as the Philippines. What unites them is a sheer love for 60's-inspired jangly mod psych/power pop, which they serve up with a passion but grounded in the musical sensibilities of today. They have played at SXSW, International Pop Overthrow, and CMJ.

+ Amplifier Magazine

Fans of bands like The Charlatans, Ride, and Spirea X will love the chiming, tremulous, Byrdsian guitar figures, harmonies that float on a cloud, and very strong hooks.

+ Allmusic

There's a graceful psychedelic drift in the Parties' brand of jangle pop that sets them apart from the dozens of other bands that worship at the altar of Roger McGuinn. The songs mine the rich melodic frameworks of classic folk-rock along with the minor-key twists of later acid-era stuff.

+ Popmatters

Solid jangly power pop band channels fellow retro guitarpop revivalists like Outrageous Cherry and the Red Button.

+ The Big Takeover

Ethics requires me to disclose that our own art director Adam Symons is one singer/songwriter in this San Francisco quartet. But I would have loved this EP even if it were the work of Lex Luthor, Moriarty, Mr. Hyde, Mr. Freeze, and the Headless Horseman. It certainly required no favoritism for the venerable Rainbow Quartz, one of this mag's fave labels, to see their utterly charming abilities. Like their roster's other acts, a Parties' party is where enchanting mid-60's pop 45s rule the turntable, boyish three-part harmonies are prerequisite, and guitars reference George Harrison, The Byrds' Roger McGuinn, The Hollies' Tony Hicks, and anything Curt Boettcher stroked. Using '00s production, Cryin' sets the controls for the heart of 1965, competing well with underappreciated gold like Help, Hollies (U.S.: Hear! Here!), Turn! Turn! Turn!, and The Millennium's 1968 throwback Begin. (There's even paternity between The Hollies' 1967 'Step Aside' lyric 'You don't need an invitation/Step inside' and 'Kensington Avenue's' 'You don't need an appointment/Just stop by.') Sum: The Parties' tasty tunes and sunny, virtuoso harmonies will worm their way into your vocal chords. Add your voice!

Can't Come Down draws many of its obvious inspirations from mild-psych 60s poppers from the golden era of rock melodicism, with a sonic lineage that figures to lead directly to the Kinks family garage.

The Parties' debut is a winning batch of '60s mod pop. There's not a song on here that would sound out of place blaring from the speakers of a boutique on Carnaby Street.

+ The Big Takeover

Can't Come Down is loaded with luscious, '60s-derived psych/power pop tunes that would make Brian Jonestown Massacre jealous.

+ Ink19

The Parties have clearly found their forte in the sugary hooks and airy vocal harmonies that run through laid-back, pillowy tracks.

+ Not Lame

A week after receiving In Rhi Fi, Rainbow Quartz sent me another top-notch promo disc by another excellent pseudo-60s group. This time, the Rickenbackers aren’t as chiming, but the tone of the Parties’ material will definitely appeal to fans of classic power-pop music. My favorite chiming track is "Gotta Get Out", but "Cold Life", "Yours And Mine", "Velvet Love Affair" and "Waterfall" are all radio-friendly tracks. The sweet boy-girl vibe reminds me a bit of the Kennedys and Dave Rave/Laura Agnelli collaborations.
