In 2006, Marmalade Souls signed up with Rainbow Quartz and recorded their full-length debut album – sheer pop perfection filled with great interchanging girl-boy vocals recalling a lysergic, 21st century, Mersey beat/jangled-up Mamas and Papas, or Rainbow Quartz’s Denise James meets Jefferson Airplane. The second track even has the sophisticated flourishes of a Teardrop Explodes song. There are other moments of catchy new wave splendor that would make Culture Club smile. The closest Rainbow Quartz labelmate comparison is the venerable Grip Weeds.
Marmalade Souls, from Sweden, is a 60s-influenced guitar-based pop group, with strong melodies, jangly guitars and shimmering vocal harmonies. Their musical journey started in 2001, when Michael Klemmé (vocals, guitars, bass & piano) and Johanna Klemmé (vocals & harmonica) decided to write music together.
In 2005, they put together a demo of 6 original songs which received great reviews. Some songs were featured on radio stations in Sweden as well as England and America. The two worked with diverse musicians live, one of whom was Paddy Lawless (drums & percussion). It was when he joined, in February 2006, that everything fell into place. And the timing could not have been more perfect: in May 2006, the demo got them a spot on the International Pop Overthrow in Liverpool, and the group played three shows in front of an enthusiastic audience.
